This summary is based on a quick appraisal of the GFS, JMA, ECMWF, UKMO, FAX,
and ENS (NCEP ensemble) labelled charts available from the superb
http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten
High confidence that high pressure will dominate the weather in southern Britain
but with further rain at times in the north from Atlantic fronts. 70% chance of
temperatures rising to 22 deg C in SE Britain by the end of the week.
Southern England, most of Wales and the Midlands and East Anglia should have a
mainly dry week and slowly becoming warmer. rather a lot of cloud at times in
the west but good sunny spells in the east. During Tuesday and Wednesday a weak
cold front coming down from the north will give some light and patchy rain but
clearing up after that as pressure builds. Possibly turning very warm by the end
of the week with temperatures into the low 20s Celsius in places. Winds
generally from a westerly quadrant and light to moderate. Frost unlikely and no
snow.
Remaining parts of Britain are likely to remain fairly cloudy in a generally
westerly airflow bringing spells of rain and showers. Most of the rain is likely
over Scotland and northern England and northern Ireland will be drier. Winds
will be moderate to fresh but moderating later in the week. A cold front in the
middle of the week (Tuesday) could give a short spell of heavy rain in places,
weakening as it comes south. Frost unlikely to be a problem and any snow will be
restricted to the scottish mountains above 3000 feet in showers.
Finally I will repeat the warning that unless southern Britain receives
substantial amounts of rain soon then a water shortage crisis could well develop
later this summer in those areas. Prolonged rainfall seems unlikely in the near
future.
