" I am very disappointed by David's decision to leave office somewhat

... masterly understated: 'somewhat earlier than expected'!!!!

# There is much work to be done in finalising our strategy and corporate
plan, and ensuring that the Met Office is properly equipped and
configured to deliver these.

My wish is to lead this work personally,
and to bequeath to my successor a strong and vibrant organisation, with
a clear vision, and commitment to make a difference to people's lives.

# The Met Office is truly a world-leading organisation and centre of
excellence in every sense of the word. It has been and remains an honour
and a privilege to lead you."

A man of vision who, true to the phenomenal ability of modern weather
forecasters to see as far ahead (sometimes) as 4 or 5 days (How long has
this front lasted to date BTW?) has realised that marriage does in
actual fact change one's domestic circumstances.

Now, along with new carpets and new lampshades, the new wife wants hubby
dear firmly wedged in the sofa in front of the TV, remote control in
hand; as masters of their respective castles everywhere are wont to do.

My wish is the next bloke will come along and undo all the faff
and to bequeath to us a strong and vibrant organisation, with
a clear vision, and commitment to make a difference to people's lives,
such as not sending them abroad to pick up faxes of the stuff we have
already paid for.
