Distribute them in DVD format with "Weather". This way the Fellows /
Members / etc of the Society would get something for the not inconsiderable
subscription we pay and those not such members could still obtain them by
purchasing that publication. The meetings are allegedly open to the public
anyway (all the Society normally asks is that non-members sign an attendance
form) so surely there is nothing confidential in them. If we can video a
musical we have presented at our church, I am sure the technology exists to
record without ruinous expense a "professional" meeting in the controlled
environment of a lecture theatre. A DVD run of the size of the "Weather"
magazine should be reasonably economical and it would certainly be worth
examining whether a slight increase in the cost of "Weather" / Society
subscriptions (which include this publication) would be justified to recover
the cost.
I very much regret that I cannot attend meetings as much as I used to,
largely due to most of the interesting ones (including this coming one)
seeming to come at times when we are very busy at work and I can't get time
off. I would love to be able to play the DVD. It would also enable us to
appreciate the best presentations whilst being able to skip the inevitable
one cranky and poorly presented offering (or perhaps we could watch it to
get the full experience of having been there!).
The answer to the General Secretary's obvious comments about the "Quarterly
Journal" publication is that the presentations at the meetings are only
"abstracts" or "selected highlights" of the full papers. Anyone wanting the
full details of the research and all those juicy equations is still going to
want the "Quarterly Journal".
