A friend who lives a couple of roads from me told me that last nights
squall snapped a large conifer in half in her garden and knocked over
her bird table. I realise that the winds were strong and gusty but I
didn't think they were that strong. Ive been for a walk this morning and
I cant see any other damage round the area. Is it possible that this was
some sort of down draft or something else with a more technical name?
Very icy roads and paths this morning. Currently -0.2C

Good point Sarah,
Here in Cambridgeshire we had one heck
of gust of wind and this is regarded as one of the most active cold fronts
in years. It gave us around 3 inches of snow or more in just 45 minutes
causing the usual chaos as you can imagine.
I saw you put a posting or two on Metcheck's bulletin board. I think it
was you anyway. I did as well. It was good, that was, and we were able to
keep tabs on exactly what weather each person was having in their area.
On the topic of the cold front. This is what Metcheck said about it. I
think there will be a lot of discussions on it in other places also.

The Arctic Blast is over. The finale was the most active frontal system
we've ever seen in our lifetime, blizzards, thunderstorms, white-outs for
most of the UK.

Thursday sees the UK return to some state of normal Winter weather with snow
cover but crisp blue skies in most areas.

The weekend will see a return to much milder weather for all of the country
but if you think Winter is over then keep you eyes out for the middle of
February".
