In a rather different context, I note from my provisional
monthly assessment of January's mean sea-level pressure
that the Icelandic low is displaced way southwest of its
normal position, just NE of Newfoundland, and that
the mean monthly pressure south of Newfoundland is
averaging 16 mbar below normal. On the rare occasions
this has happened before in Dec, Jan or Feb it seems to
be a precursor (though not immediately) to a major and
prolonged blocking episode over the NEAtlantic/WEurope
sector.
