TEMPERATU
May 2005
Mean of 24hr max & min:... 12.5 [+0.1 anomaly on eLTA 1971-2000]
Although the mean temperature for the month is around 'average', this
disguises some notably cool daytime periods: 16 of the days had maxima
= 0.5degC below the LTA, and on five days (4th, 9th-11th & 17th), the
best temperatures were 3 or more degC below the eLTA.
As late as the 17th of the month, the day maximum reached just 13.2°C,
4degC below average: only the late-month 'correction', afforded by the
warm spell 25th-27th, prevented us ending up with a negative anomaly.
Some notes spring 2005:
The temperature anomaly for the three spring months (March, April & May)
was +0.7degC. This is the same as last year (2004), but the pattern was
different. Last year we had a chilly March, followed by a warm April and
May. This year the pattern was inverted: The monthly anomalies for
March, April & May this year a +0.8, +1.1 & +0.1degC respectively.
The running 12 month temperature anomaly is: +0.8degC, slightly down on
last month's rolling 12 month anomaly.
PRECIPITATION:
For May, the total here was 20.4mm [ 35% of eLTA 1971-2000]
In the composite Easthampstead Park / Tawfield record (1971-2005), this
May is the
driest since May 1991 & one of the 'top-5' driest such-named months in
the series which started in 1971.
spring 2005:
The spring rainfall total = 126.7mm, represents 78% of the eLTA
(1971-2000)
The rainfall anomaly for the year so far = 66%
The running 12 month rainfall anomaly: 77% (down from 82% last month)
