Glenlivet hottest yesterday?

My mother tells me that it says in her newspaper (and I use the term
loosely, it's The Sun) that the hottest place in the UK yesterday was
Glenlivet, at 29.8C, which it also says is the second highest temperature
recorded in Scotland since records began, 45 years ago.
It all sounds highly suspect to me - any comments?

Yes and no. Glenlivet's highest reading yesterday was 30.0°C
which may well be a new station record, beating 29.9°C in
June 1976. The reported 29.8°C was, I suspect, the highest
hourly or 3-hourly reading. It was, though, no hotter than
Hurn airport (Bournemouth) which also had 30.0°C.
No reason to disbelieve it: Aviemore which is at a slightly greater
altitude had 29.0°C.
Glenlivet was always a privately run station, although that
may have changed in recent times. It dates back to 1965.
