The 944 mm, reported in The Guardian as
94.4 cm, seems a bit on the wild side.
... the figure is still listed (at time of posting this) on the IMD
Bombay/Mumbai RMC site
http://www.imdmumbai.gov.in/Bdwrweb.htm
Martin.
Here's the time series of precip at Santacruz
http://www.imdmumbai.gov.in/dcrf_scz.htm
Looking at the distribution of the highest single day July rains from
Santacruz from 1974-2004, it looks like 944 is a little bit more common
than a 1% event (it works about to about once per 90 years.)

Harold
There seems to be nothing like a 944mm figure in the table for the Mumbai
rainfall over the past week on the website you quote. The maximum seems to
be 151mm at Dharavi on 21 July.
What table?
I cited the plot at http://www.imdmumbai.gov.in/dcrf_scz.htm. On it,
they had had ~900 mm from 1 June-26 July. One day later, the cumulative
precip for the season is 1800 mm.
