All regions were 1 to 2 degC warmer than average, taking
September as a whole, and much of the country was also drier
and sunnier than average.

Looking at the distribution of pressure at sea-level, the
Icelandic Low was displaced far to the northeast of its usual
position and was 995mbar in the Barents Sea. A marked
trough extended back to Iceland with a just-about-detectable
circulation, 1002mbar, near SE Iceland. The Azores High was
in situ at 1024mbar, and a strong ridge extended NE across
northern France and Germany to a second high centred 1022
mbar over Belarus. The mean flow over the UK was SW-ly,
though only weakly so in southern regions.
The mean pressure anomaly field was quite weak over the
North Atlantic, the British Isles and southern Europe, but there
was a strong anomalous SW-ly flow over Scandinavia and
northern Russia. The main anomaly centres we
-11 mbar east of Spitsbergen
+6 mbar near Moscow
+6 mbar over western Greenland
+3 mbar just NE of the Azores
-3 mbar mid-Atlantic at 52N 35W
The anomalous flow was weakly SW-ly over central and
northern parts of the UK, but with a hint of SE-ly or E-ly
in southern districts.

Rainfall percentages ranged from 187 at Broadford (Skye) to
25 at Aboyne (Aberdeenshire) -- some rain shadow !!
Sunshine percentages ranged from 134 at Ross-on-Wye
(Herefs) to 75 at Stornoway (W.Isles).
