Shortage of TS

Hello Bernard
I've been trying to cross reference your data with RAOB soundings from
Herstmonecux.
I presumed there was a discrepancy, because your data, records if thunder
happen within the last 24 hours, while the RAOB soundings are a snapshot,
only taken at noon and midnight.
I cannot understand how Herstmonceux can become automated, when there
needs to be someone to send a weather balloon up twice a day.
I get my RAOB data from the University of Wyoming, I presumed that all
RAOB soundings made in the British Isles are carried out by the Met
office.

The figures for Wokingham for the summer months (Jun, Jul Aug) are as

1999 13
2000 8
2001 10
2002 8
2003 5
2004 6
2005 7
Beware possible changes in observing practices at the stations you use.
Herstmonceux has probably become mainly automated obs during that period.
If
your data is supplied by the Met Office, you should query this point with
them.

Surely Herstmonceux uses Auto Sondes, which obviously require some prior
manual attention but not sure how this relates to somone available to
hear thunder 24 hrs a day ?
