I recently posted a report of some violent, very localised & very slow
moving rain/hail showers that formed along the spine of Cornwall early last
Saturday afternoon. I drove through them on the way back through Cornwall,
and the A30 was closed near Camborne where conditions were atrocious.
I've since discovered that there were 5 separate accidents, affecting both
carriageways, in around 10 minutes as cars drove from dry conditions onto a
road streaming with water and covered in thick layer of slushy hail.
Interestingly exactly the same thing happened on exactly the same stretch of
road 2 years ago.
It is common enough for intense showers to form along the spine of Cornwall,
but this spot is particularly prone. I think convergence is probably
intensified here as it is where the north south aligned Lizard peninsula
meets the main ENE/WNW spine of Cornwall.
Similarly north coast summer storms, which occur with the onset of a north
coast sea breeze undercutting a light south gradient wind, are particularly
common just east of Godrevy, Trevose Head & Tintagel, where the change in
the coast's aspect can lead to 3 way convergence.
