Following on from the snow warning issued yesterday, it still looks like very
cold air will spread south to all parts on thursday night bringing bands of
snow, especially to hilly areas. Confidence is 75%.
On Friday and Saturday some severe conditions are likely with heavy snow in many
places above 200m with a risk of blocked roads. Still difficult to pin down
areas most at risk but at present hilly western and northern areas seem most
likely to get heavy snow on Friday and upland eastern areas on Saturday but
confidence is low on this detail. Lowland areas are more marginal and any
accumulations at low-level may be temporary. There is likely to be some thawing
of lying snow later on Saturday and on Sunday as less cold air from surounding
seas gets embroiled in the low pressure circulation. But generally staying cold
with some "knife edge" snow situations into the following week.
The Dartmoor sledging forecast will be issued on thursday.
Will.
