Default I've got a bad feeling about that high

Don't you not think that with a high of 1040 hPa and high contour values that
will lead to strong subsidence which will tend to lower the subsidence inversion
so that low cloud will disperse? Also do you not think that as the high
retrogresses (moves west) then a cooler (and clearer) northwesterly flow perhaps
later veering northerly could become established ? Initially it may have a lot
of cloud but there's plenty of reasons why it won't persist? Also it is not
clear that the air in the south will have much Atlantic origin could be quite a
lot of drier continental air mixed in in a light SE or even E drift?

Will,

Chances are you've forgotten more than I'll even know about meteorology
- so I would never deign to pit my wits against you - but I was looking
at todays UKMO forecast charts - and they all show a decaying front
embedded right through the centre of the High.

Subsidence may lead to an inversion - but the cause of the gloom is not
necessary any consolation for the gloom itself.

Any Northwesterly would be on the West side of a warm front - laden with
moisture to entrain in the high, under the inversion; outcome is
Stratus, Fog and gloom - but not very cold.

If, and only if the High moves North, and we get a day or two of
Easterlies could we see some drier air move in.

We shall see - but for now, I've put the sun-block back in the drawer
