Smoke plume - aviation consequences?

Dear All
I've been away on a break in Europe, so managed to miss most of the
"plume" incident. Out of interest, did anybody know if there was a danger
to aviation flying through the smoke?
Yes. LHR and Luton got their holding "stacks" moved. People flying under
VFR were diverted.
I suspect the original query related to the aspects of flying throught
the smoke as regards effects on engines and airframes rather than the
ATC consequences.
Believe it or not, I am unsure. I know that flying through volcanic
ash is bad news as it has caused engines to stop. I have flown through
fairly dense stubble fires with no adverse effects so I would not
expect that flying through the oil fire smoke plume would be a problem.
Nevertheless, as I am unsure, I would avoid doing so.
I'm glad I'm retired now so don't have to consider such matters
today:-)
