It's also arguably quicker, if you decide that you only want to expand

*thickness* as the coloured field, rather than the 500 hPa, which former
is more intuitive when trying to trace areas of warm and cold air.

Thanks for that, Martin. A very useful site. Prior to this
I had used the Mittel Wolken section of the Topkarten maps because they
show thickness lines, but only every 18 dam. I wish they'd use the old
(and maybe present) Met Office colours, eg 564 red etc. A minor
quibble.
