RMK: Ppn very slight. The atmosphere smells strongly, as if
there was a large chemical plant nearby. The smell is
quite noticeable even indoors

RMK: Hoar frost melting but ground frozen hard. Less of a smell
now but the pollution earlier this morning was the worst
I have experienced for a very long time.

... the air quality site doesn't report anything unusual he-

which is odd as given the notable surface-based inversion, the source of
the airflow and the very light airs, would suggest the potential for
something rather higher than the 4 or 5 (out of 10) that is indicated
from the sparse data network available.

As you described earlier in this thread, Martin, the pollution could be
tasted and caught at the back of the throat. I noticed it as soon as I
got out of bed. My first thought was that there was a fault in the
central heating but when I went out to the garden at about 0615z I
realised that it was pollution in the air. It was certainly the worst I
have experienced for very many years.

With the N'ly wind starting to increase, the pollution is rapidly
decreasing. Looks like we'll see breaks developing in the cloud cover
soon.
