A northerly, even better a north-westerly is far better than an
easterly here. Polars lows, troughs and all manner of interesting
features are music to the ears of any NW-England snow lover!

The trouble with winds swinging round too far to the west is
of course that it won't be cold enough to snow. However with the
seas being around their coldest of the year, any such N/NW
sceanario must have a reasonable chance of producing the
goods here.
