The original Ivan got sheared, with the lower and mid levels of the
storm getting caught up in the front and shunted northeastward. The
upper level low was effectively cut off by this mid level sheering and
slowly spun and drifted its way east off the coast of NC. It was the
last day of our vacation in the Outer Banks when Ivan's upper level
remnants were ruining the arrival day of the new set of weekly
vacationers.

Once it got offshore, it was then turned around by the strong N.
Atlantic ridge back to the SE, S, and SW before finally crossing into
the Gulf where it is now Ivan, Jr.

No doubt, the hurricane season of 2004 will be one that is studied
intently for years to come.

Pretty weird, huh? I thought the same thing. According to our
newspaper this morning part of it broke off and headed south, back
across Florida, hit the gulf and reorganized. They debated on naming it
Matthew the next storm or Ivan2. It depended on if they classified it
as "the" remnants or "a" remnant. They opted for "the remnants" and
it's heading into Texas/Louisiana as a Tropical Storm. I heard
Beaumont, TX awhile ago.
