Ive just looked at the FAA site and it says:

hail (greater than 3/4")
GR
METAR

hail showers
SHGR
METAR

hail showers (small)
SHGS
METAR

Mine certainly were smaller than 3/4", but I thought GS was soft hail - the
polar air type where the stones are 'fluffy' in a cold airmass
