Spring 2006 - synoptic overview
Although each of the three months displayed very different
synoptic characteristics, low sea-level pressure lay over or
near the British Isles for long periods. The mean seasonal
sea-level pressure chart showed a broad zone of low
pressure extending from the Canadian Maritimes to
Scandinavia, and the main low centre of 1007mbar
was located at 59N 12W. The Azores high was very
weak (1018mbar) and displaced south of its usual position,
while there was a prominent extension of the Arctic
anticyclone across Greenland.
The sea-level pressure anomaly field showed below-
average pressure over most of Europe and the northern
Atlantic (except for the seas around Greenland and Iceland).
Anomaly centres we
-6mbar southwest of the Azores
+4mbar over Greenland and the Russian Arctic.
