RMK: Sun broke through at 07z ... much more Ci visible earlier
with a weak solar halo at 08z. Trying to identify horizon visible
bearing 280deg between slightly nearer hills - it seems to be the
flank of the Cotswolds in the vicinity of Stow-on-the-Wold
which is 70km away.

You have a rather better selection of visibility points than I have,
Philip. The furthest object I can see from the house/garden here is the
top of an electricity pylon all of 2 km to the SW! All my visibility
reports are estimates based on the apparent clarity of the air. The lie of
the land and the proliferation of mature trees around here means that in
most directions the furthest objects that can be seen are in the 100-500
metre range.

I do actually have to take a walk across a field (about 250-300m,
I think) to get the view, but that does help keep the legs and
lungs working.
