There has been a notable reduction of Atlantic Tropical storms this
year compared to last when by this stage there had been 10 storms
including 4 Hurricanes two of which reached cat4. It was predicted that
this year would be another very active year but it would seem that the
sea surface temperatures are wrong for this with all the positive
anomalies being in mid latitudes. Even the major positive anomaly close
to the Arctic that seems to have been there as almost a permanent
feature over the last few years has significantly declined. Strangely
this does not seem to have increased the formation of depressions over
mid latitudes.
