According to BBC Ceefax page 407, Torquay was the sunniest place in the
UK with 10.8hrs of sunshine.
It has been virtualy cloudy all day here in Teignmouth, South Devon.
Even allowing for the fact that any sunshine after 18:00 yesterday
would have been included, this is utter nonsense.
Once I get out of the house this morning, I will check the official
Teignmouth sunshine hours for yesterday, but I'm sure it is nowhere
near 10.8hrs for yesterday.
David, the 1700-1700 figure in the papers was 2.8h. Do you have
access to the Teignmouth observer, or is the figure simply posted
on a board or in the local council office window, or something? Do
you know if Teignmouth still uses a Campbell-Stokes recorder?
Torquay, I believe, has an electronic sensor which is clearly set
up incorrectly and records sunshine at too low a threshold. Perhaps
if Torbay Council (or whoever the authority is) were made aware
that we all know they're being economical with the actualité they
might be shamed into having it re-set.
