Default Disappointing August vs June/July

Not sure what the answer is to the question about this disappointing
August Nick, but up here in Coventry, we have just had our coolest week
33 since 1999, the wettest since 1997 and the dullest since 1980!

Certainly nothing like July, but August certainly hasn't been a bad
month here.

We've had some very pleasant warm sunshine the last few days,
especially right on the south coast (and the odd rather intense
thunderstorm last Thurs/Friday!). Cloud broke noon today to give a
pleasant afternoon, and there was actually some reasonable surf on the
south coast where it wasn't chopped up. The sea felt lovely at 18C. I
was joined by a seal for the 2nd time this year.

Statistically we've had 94% of the normal total August rainfall so far,
which is higher than most places in the SW due to a couple of recent
deluges. Temperatures (1st-20th) +0.9C compared to the LTA for the
whole of August. Looking at Philip's web pages the SW has done better
than the rest of the UK as far as temperature deviation from the LTA is
concerned. Penzance has probably benefitted from the high SSTs, which
have been around 18C off west Cornwall for several weeks now.
