I'm also one of those sad railway enthusiasts (aka trainspotters) who
inwardly seethes when they show a GWR locomotive with the whistle of a
southern pacific hauling a LNER train up the E Coast main line.

Well, we trainspotters up to the age of 13, which is not so sad.
(I've copped all the 61XX class, I'll have you know).
The LNER train you refer to will start from Horsted Keynes, of
course. The Bluebell Railway makes quite a bit of money from this
hocus-pocus, which can surely only be a good thing.
