First snow day of Athens: Nov 4th

What is the normal number of days per year with snow cover
at low levels around Athens, Yannis?
Hmm, it should be only about 1 in the lee-side of the mountains (suburbs of
Athens just southwest of the centre) but I really have no clue what the
number should be in the wind prone areas. I am sorry to say that I have
found no statistics for days with lying snow for Greece. On the other hand,
the HNMS definition for snow days is stricter than that of WMO. It is only
during the last few years that more data has been available thanks to -alas-
amateurs.
Just to give you a hint, at my (former) site in the SE suburbs of Athens
(142 m amsl, lee side of the mountains), one can expect 12 snow days and 3
days with lying snow per year -but with noticeable variability from year to
year. The further north and/or further uphill one goes, the more snow days
they'd get. A rough estimation for Steni (in central Evia) would be roughly
40 days with lying snow per year. At the nearby coast, the figure should be
close to 5. Put the blame on mountains!
