Thanks Yannis and John for your speedy replies. As always floods of
help from the newsgroup.

Being able to crop the image (if necessary) and reduce the colour depth
can also help, and so can fiddling with the JPG compression.

Warning: do the fiddling on a copy, not the original! You'd probably
worked that out anyway, but just in case....
