Anything by H H Lamb, particularly "Climate: past, present
and future" (2 vols).

Less technical but a very good read is Robin Stirling's "The
weather of Britain".

Or the works of Allan Watts :

Instant Weather Forecasting has a picture of a sky on every other page,
with what it may mean in the text.

Instant Wind Forecasting uses the same format.

Worth Googling to see what else he has in print - Cruising Weather is
worthwhile but too technical and too specialised for Mr Bennett's
requirement.

Does the Observer's Book Of Weather still exist?
