Hi Will, I know you bin anything I write, but this is a serious question,
what causes gustiness, why don't the wind just blow, without all the stop
go.
Joe

Never have time to reply to everyone Joe.

Gustiness is caused by many factors. Turbulence (transport of momentum in the
vertical), friction properties of varying land surfaces, precipitation loading,
changes in air density (e.g. gust front) to name a few. Generally the wind is
steadier over the sea (although heavy showers can produce violent gusts at sea)
and above what is called the boundary layer whose depth varies according to
temperature and moisture variation in the vertical but is often circa 900m in
depth in the UK.

HTH a bit.

Will.
