Yesterday afternoon/evening interesting as small developing low
tracked ENE between Fair Isle and Sumburgh - eventually leaving us
in
a F9 NW'ly.
1600z aircraft being vectored onto an approach for 09 at Sumburgh
queried surface winds. Was told 120deg at 20kt. The pilot replied
he
had SW'ly 50kts at 2500ft, range 7 miles. Shortly later commented
that between 2000ft and 1500ft, range 4 miles wind became 120deg.
In
his words it was "Quite bumpy"!
Early Friday evening - after one aircraft had aborted a landing due
to cross-winds gusting 60kt and severe turbulence (only runway
27/06
is allowed after dark) following aircraft were advised not to
attempt
a landing and once they had turned back for Aberdeen, Inverness etc
the airport closed.
Quite unsettled here this last week as four deep lows (pressure
falls/rises usually in excess of 10hPa/3hrs) passed close by.
Pointless exercise really, but pressure falls totaled 107hPa and
rises 128hPa in the seven days.
