It sometimes surprises me though, when normally it is flat calm along the
south Devon coast, then suddenly you can get big rollers coming in, even on
Sidmouth beach. The local surfers seem to know when they are going to
arrive. I suppose it is to do with the point of origin out in the Atlantic,
and that must be a small window in line-of-sight direction squeezing between
Brest and Lizard.

Yes, just a couple of miles can make a big difference.

It would be good to get more detail on the swell maps. They are
setting up more buoys (ones' going in the middle of Mount's Bay) to
measure wave height. So there might be more fact & less inspired
guesswork involved in the future.
