Sounds like you have some moisture in the pipes. I've not heard of it
freezing up in this area.
Something odd, maybe a U (might be very shallow) with water in it.
We've never had a problem up here even with overnight lows below -10C and
ice days. Our heating notionally goes off about 2330 until 0630 but parts
of the system are on a frost stat so when it does get that cold it will
fire up a couple of times/night.
Tank outlet is about 18" maybe 2' above the boiler but the pipe run is
quite long 20m or so all exterior apart from the last metre.
