We called the school this morning and told them that we were keeping the
kids off to go sledging!!

What a disgrace.
That should count as truancy.

I don't know if it's still the case but some US schools used to schedule "snow days"
into winter terms. Any day of extreme weather could be declared a "snow day"
and the school stayed closed for the day. At the end of the term unused "snow
days" were taken as "holiday".

Some, mostly in more northern climes, still do. I think the district I
grew up in had 2 per year and we generally used at least one. In
Norman, we don't have any, so we've got to make up those days that were
cancelled this year. We were scheduled to be off 16 and 19 Feb and
those days off are now gone, and then we'll have the other 3 days added
at the end of the year.
