Weather averages - data source?

Many of you post monthly data including 1971 to 2000 eLTA data.
Is this simply the nearest weather station on the Met Office web site,
or is there another source for this?
Where I live in NW Essex there is no nearby weather station. The four
nearest seem to be Cambridge, Wattisham, Greewich and Rothamsted. I'm
tempted to do some sort of geographical averaging but would like
advice from the group.
I think you will find that Andrewsfield (Stebbing) is the nearest to you,
not too far away and a similar setting. Somewhere in my PC I have a link
to pages of annual rainfall and temperature data for your neighbour
Stansted in the last few decades of the 20th Century. When I can find the
link I'll send it to you.
In the meantime why not have a look at the COL website where a number of
us send our data?
And if you e-mail me your exact location or grid reference I'll read off
your
annual rainfall from the official map. But bear in mind that if you have an
AWS you are almost certainly collecting less rain (by up to 15%) than
you would in a manual rain-gauge. It shouldn't be too difficult to estimate
monthly temperature and rainfall averages from this and from Stansted/
Andrewsfield (as George says) once you have, say, two years' worth of
data to compare with.
