Was down at Solent again today between 1600BST and 1900BST and checked
the shade temperature in an area upto half a mile inland and at both
ends of the town. I found that it was 23C (rounded) in the entire area
as I arrived at 1600, falling below 22.5 between 1630 and 1700 and
below 22 at around 1730. Using the same thermometer and method, the
temperature at home 5 miles inland was 22 deg C (rounded) as I set off
at 1545 and this was the day's maximum here so yet again, it was a
degree lower here than on the coast.

With a brisk nor'easter, today's session was much easier than
yesterday and what I recorded is consistent with the reported max of
23.3C at Solent MRSC which probably occurred very close to 1600 BST.
The Hurn figures are also supportive, for a change. I think any
Stevenson screen effect today would have been insignificant because of
the brisk wind.

I'm not going to do this every day but it's been a darned good excuse
to get down to the beach while it's been "July in April!"

Dave, do you keep a rain-gauge in your garden too? Now that
the resorts have gone, there's nothing immediately available
between Thorney Island and Hurn since Solent and NOC are
inappropriate sites for measuring rain. Thorney Island reported
none at all in April, Hurn ~5mm, but these days you can never
be sure whether the tipping-bucket mechanism is working or not
during periods with only small amounts of rain. Nigel's figure
at Romsey should be interesting too.
