39.7 mm from today's rain at Haytor. Monthly total now 103.5 mm (average
is
86mm).
A wet morning with continuous heavy rain. Bright this afternoon with sunny
intervals and excellent visibility.
Took a short 10 mile walk on the high moor round Okehampton this morning
to
experience the conditions in a small group. Started at Meldon quarry and
followed Red-a-Ven brook and then up West Mill Tor at 541m and then back
down
through Okehampton camp where the Ten Tors is based. Needless to say it
was wet
this morning but nothing extreme for Dartmoor and very little wind till
midday'ish. Dried up a lot this afternoon with even some sun. Patchy hill
fog
above 400m asl this morning but the helicopters were flying, visibility
improved
dramtically this afternoon but still patches of drizzly rain. Rivers were
in
spate but the moor was nothing like that day earlier in the year when poor
Charlotte Shaw lost her life near Watern Tor, I was out walking that day
too, so
I can compare.
So to sum up today, a typical wet day on Dartmoor (by Dartmoor standards)
but
this was NOT severe weather for Dartmoor, I've personally been out in much
worse
wind, rain and snow.
Did they make the right decision to abandon the Ten Tors? Yes I think so,
bad
luck, but at least they had one day!
Will.

Ended up with 6mm here which I suspect is less than was expected in the
forecast.
