As one reader of the BBC web site wrote from his 'home' in Tooting ...

"I have never seen rain like it. I have just been in the garden, trying
to
get the water out."

Funny people down there in the south.

Actually it became so much like a Cecil B Demille movie around 12:30
(over
cast), that I was just about to break my self-imposed protocol and post
from work in Dulwich SE London. I know human perception is easily fooled
and memories very subjective but I could not recall ever seeing it so
dark
and as the deluge followed I suddenly remembered how prone to flooding
our
basement was. I rushed downstairs warning all to get prepared for the
ensuing flood as the sewers and drainage system reached full capacity
and
believe me they did-mind you not as bad as last June but the three
basement
offices are now unusable as the carpets had to be ripped up.

This was our third flood in as many years, I have to say that though that
due to the increasingly rising population in London's suburbs that the
old
drainage system just can't process all that increasing run-off coupled
with rising sewer usage.

Why didn't UKMO warn us with red graphics ???????

They did.

Will I was joking, I'm always on about their bloody graphics. Turned out
this time though that they were right, to be honest we've all followed the
warnings( where I work) there's been so many it just became a case of
"whatever". The boy who cried "wolf " somes to mind..
Strangley enough I called a firm in South Wales who deal in portable
floodgates they were a little cynical of the OTT warning as well and they
sell the bloody things. I don't know maybe it's me, maybe we all need to put
up floodgates every time the red warnings go up.
