Dave
A horrendous evening !! - something I will remember for a long while.
To busy to take my own photos this time around !!
The Alston Rrain gauge measured 33.6mm, with 28mm in the same time
period as yourself !!
Just shows that even a couple of miles away there can be fast
differences in rainfall totals
How does this compare with that t-storm of 2004 ?

Big thunderstorm in the High Pennines this evening around Alston
Around 2" (50mm) in the hour from 1700 to 1800 and another 1/2" in the few
hours afterwards. I wasn't here to witness it but it does appear to have
been well defined. Coming home around midnight the roads where dry until
Scotch Corner and only normally wet until entering the top of South
Tynedale, where the amount of run off and debris increased very rapidly.
Debris meaning road covered, verge to verge in stones up to 2" across
mixed with gravel, lots of running and standing water and this several
hours after it stopped.
Large amounts of water, lots of debris to sort out in the morning.
The Garrigill Road from the B6277 is closed beyound Thortergill. Water has
got under the 2" thick tarmac surface and lifted chunks of it away at
Garrigill Bridge and buckled an area. This water then flowed along the
road for several hundred yards at least a foot deep before washing out 20
odd foot section of wall to get back into the river.
Pictures of the aftermath will probably appear on my web site later
tonight.
