Default [OT]Queensland rains - *ping* Blair Trewin

August is supposed to be the middle of the dry season along
the Sunshine Coast ... but there appears to have been
714mm in 24h (859mm in 60h) at a place called Rainbow
Beach on Thursday 23rd August.

I have a vague recollection of reading of even greater amounts
of rain in the region in a MetMag from the 1880s or 1890s,
but I'm sure it was in the mountains rather than on the coast,
and I can't remember the time of year.

Press reports this time talk about a once-in-100yr depression
off the Queensland coast, whatever that means in the context
of winter synoptics in the region.

If Blair is reading this, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd
be grateful if he could give us a bit of background.
