I'm sure it's natural because of the way it blends with the
cloud to the north but I have no idea what the cause is.
There are some interesting developments over Bulgaria and
Romania with what looks like vigorous thunderstorms, some of them
turning into mesoscale systems.

I've had a look at some higher resolution imagery and it seems that the
formations grew out of contrails.
