See other posts with the addition that some types of vehicle are not
allowed on motorways, mainly slow moving things like horse drawn vehicles
and agricultural tractors. Pedestrians are also not allowed. A motorway
will also have a "hard shoulder" for use in emergency and to allow
emergency vehicles access when the carriageways are all nose to tail after
an RTC.
