... a very short period of moderate rain here in Bracknell ~23Z
(midnight local), and surfaces *were* temporarily quite wet: yet

the
rainfall yielded just 0.2mm ... absolutely useless! All 'hard'

surfaces
now bone dry. Topsoil just about showing signs that it might have

rained
in the night, but if you didn't have radar or the evidence of

seeing the
rain fall, you might have thought it was dewfall.

And here in the not-quite-so-arid northern Home Counties
where last night's torrential downpour amounted to 0.5mm
and the monthly total is approaching 60mm, the ground is
now rock hard (after, you'll remember, having been damp
and slightly soft until July 22 or 23).

Lowest July totals to date (to hand):
18mm Perth, 19mm Leuchars, 27mm Portland,
29mm Aviemore, Baltasound and Hereford.

We had no detectable rain last night and the monthly total here is 33.3mm
and this will almost ceratinly be the monthly total. This area missed out on
most of the heavy rain early in July which I commented on at the time. I
think that the guage does tend to under record but I am generally within 10%
of the figures in the Monthly Met Office summary so July like June is
proving to be a dry month. MAximum temperature yesterday 29.3°C.
