Another March 2003 would do for me, then again last year's March was pretty
good as well.

The thought of a cold and wet spring - yuk! I still haven't got over last
summer. That's going to take a few good heatwaves to erase.

I wouldn't get too despodent just yet Nick because Will's prediction
of a cold and wet start to Spring is what normally tends to happen
- hence the oft quoted saying of 'March coming in like a lion'.
CEP Brookes writing in his 'The English Climate' (1954) quotes
statistical evidence that the frequency of cyclonic storms at the
start of March was so great that the odds of it being due to chance
were more than 2000 to 1 against.
In the updated edition of the same book by HH Lamb (1964) he says that
the period 1-9 March has a notable peak frequency of 'northerly
types' with the years highest peak frequency of snow in Edinburgh and
the years 2nd highest peak in London.
