did *not* change the subject. If you look at the headers of each post,
you'll see a line.

That was in the headers of the post *you* made at 14.35 on the 3rd and
Graham's reply merely retained that header, and thus the subject. Your
main problem lies with using the Google interface to Usenet. Google
clearly doesn't thread properly as a proper newsreader does.
