Default Shetland warmth

Pretty unusual, I'd say, given that the all-time record is 24°C
(I think).

Something sticks in my mind that 24°C is the record for Orkney as well. I
would have thought that Shetland's record would have been lower than Orkney
but you never know.

I was in Orkney when the thermometer 'hit' 21°C. All the locals were moaning
and asked how I coped with the dreadful heat and humidity being out 'in it'
all day long. I replied that I thought it was the first really pleasant day
I had experienced in the 6 weeks I had been there that summer.

One of the Orcadians visited me the following year in July 1995. They had
only ever visited Aberdeen a few times. It was during that very hot summer
and it nearly killed them. They spent the first few days just lying down and
covering their head with a wet flannel. It was exceptionally hot but they
had never experienced anything like it before. Gradually they acclimatised
and started to enjoy the hot evenings outside in the garden and swimming in
the nearby river.
