Thanks for the advice, it is appreciated, but I don't want to learn
how to sovle the myriad of problems that a hugely flexible OS
can present. I just want the *%!*^&ing thing to work!
I'm back on 800x600. The whole thing of trying to get the other
mode to be useable was just too distressing.

Your setting is of the type that was poor in the days of Win 98. I'd
suggest you update your drivers.
How old is your system?

You can find out what hardware you have by getting hold of Belarc or
Everest or some such home system analyst and finding out the make and
model of your graphics card.

When you download the driver(s) you may be prompted to load it in the
quick-start. You don't need anything to check for updates in there.
You only need your security running there.

Then use a separate search engine to go to the manufacturer's site and
look for a new driver. Beware third party sites as they might not be
the best for you.

(I have an autodictionalry (CleverKeys) in the quick-start too and a
note copyfiler called Ditto. The only other thing you might need in
there is something to kill the Insert and Caps Lock keys.)

K-Meleon is a faster browser than Firefox but if you are a newby to
the net or don't want to learn, then I recommend you get Opera. You
can leave it to open the tabs you regularly visit each time you start
it.

It is feature rich but not imposing.
