Just got soaked *measuring* the rain from 5" gauge which was in danger of
overflowing.
Total is now 57.1mm (this is my highest total since moving here in April
2002).
Quite surprised you haven't recorded more considering your alt.
My biggest 24hrs (to 09:00) totals since 2002 in Penzance:-
84.5mm on 13/11/02 (100mm fell on the moors above St. Ives) and
78.9mm on 26/6/06
My most intense rainfall ever was 90.2mm in just under 2 hours in
Wootton Bassett (near Swindon) back in June '82, when Lyneham (just 3
miles away) recorded virtually nil. 92mm was recorded 1 mile to the
north of me at Purton. In those days the MetO were rather more
interested in local observations, so I had a visit from them. I was
also sent lots of data on the event, and my records were included in
June "Hydrometeorological bulletin". All sadly rather different now,
as the poor chap responsible for trying to re-establish the Penzance
station knows only too well.
