Could be lots of reasons Philip.
Still a number of fields locally yet to be harvested, and there could
lie the problem. It's often difficult to tell one farmers land from
another, so he may well have been harvesting over the hill, or
possibly waiting for a contractor tied up elsewhere.
In 1974 when farming in Cornwall, we got around a 50 acre field once
in September and never got back into again, so it ended up being strip
grazed.
I think it was also that year in December that there was a photo in
Farmers Weekly of a Scottish farmer combining with a light fall of
snow on the ground! I've seen this subsequently as well.
