Will, would you expect to get sleet at 550m so early in October, or is it
notably early?

I've no reliable records at those altitudes but given the below average
temps and the fact that the earliest snowfall at my altitude since 2002
was on 22nd October 2003, I think that it is a bit early for modern times.
The temperature has seemed keen to fall this year so far and it will be
interesting to see how the winter pans out. I suspect my "snow falling"
days will be up.

Going back a bit further, Will, I remember reading about the unusually
early snowfalls of 20 September 1919. These are well documented in Philip
Eden's book 'Weatherwise' ( page 151)." Two inches of snow fell on Exmoor
and above 1600 feet on Dartmoor" .
