know that December 1981 was ranked one of the coldest December's on record,

To save you looking the Dec 1981 CET was 0.3°C, so we've some
way to go yet. The first few days of Dec 1981 were very mild and it
reached 15°C in Aberdeen on the 3rd, according to Weather Log. The
general circulation was very anomalous and in a very unusual way in
that the Icelandic Low was displaced a long way SE to be over much of
the UK. The temperature anomaly was least in the south, unusual for a
very cold month.
